Columns may be marked for being hidden. This is a client-side tweak that has no benefit to server performance. When dataTables.js sees a column marked for being hidden, it removes it from the DOM, but retains traces of it in memory. Some of the dataTables.js plugins have used this to allow you to send columns that are invisible on the main website, but if exported to CSV by the client, are included and visible as usual.
